Review by: Root Rot

May (2002)
Directed by: Lucky McKee
“May” is the story of a torment girl on the brink of insanity named May Dove Canady played by Angela Bettis.
Plot: May is a loner who only desire in life is the companionship of a friend. During her childhood, May was forced to wear an corrective eye patch for her “google eye”. As an adult, May is Sounded by weird co workers, the guy from entourage, and her oldest friend (a doll). Slowly becoming a whack job, May makes a friend the only way she knows how….End
Around 30minute mark of the movie I wanted to stick a sharp pencil in my ear. By over exaggerating the social awkwardness of May, Bettis destroys a potentially good character and turns the May character into a cliche. Bettis’s acting did not convince me that May was a disturbed young woman on the brink of complete insanity.
The rest of the characters were equally over exaggerated and annoying with the exception of the co-star Jeremy Sisto who play May’s love interest Adam.
If you have seen as many “appears to be harmless, tormented chick, that’s about to do something fuck up” films as I have then you would understand why “May” falls short.
On the Root Rot scale of (A+) being the best and (E) the worst, the 2002 “May” gets a (D+).
A side note, I did find the ending scene disturbing in a good way.

Enjoyed the review good sir! I disagree with you as I enjoyed the quirk and awkwardness Bettis portrayed as May, though. I haven’t rewatched this one in a few years, I’ll be revisiting it now, thanks in part to your review. Looking forward to the Faces of Death and Shadow of the Vampire reviews, keep it up!
That’s what my friend said about my review that I did for him. Thanks for the feedback friend O
Sweet. I am always hearing people praise this movie and I never understood why. Glad to see someone is on my side on this one.
I see why people enjoy the movie. My mother loves the movie and so do a majority of my friends. I simply didn’t. I am indeed on your side on this one Mike! Thanks for the feedback
I’ve wanted to see this movie for awhile since everybody says it’s such a great film. Glad to know you have a mind of your own and aren’t afraid to go against the grain. Looking forward to reading & hearing more from you!
The film just didn’t do it for me. I do respect others and would suggest it based on other peoples views. Thanks Bill
