Childhood Classics Revisited: An American Werewolf in London (1981) by Horrorcore Bart

Lately I’ve been re-watching a lot of movies that I loved as a child. Needless to say not all of them hold up. Being the attention whore that I am I decided that I need to share my experiences with all of TWH’s readers. And Root Rot (being the great human being that he is) has allowed me to do so. Last night I was bored so I figured what better way to kick things off than with An American Werewolf in London?

An American Werewolf in London (1981)
Written and Directed by: John Landis
Staring: David Naughton, Jenny Agutter, and Frank Oz
I think I was 5 or 6 the first time that I saw this movie and thinking back I remember it being really good. The few things that stick out in my mind are the transformation into the wolf, the wolf attack in the Moores, and of course the sex scene. I don’t remember it being too scary, but I remember it being good over all.
Now all that being said, I haven’t seen the movie sense. So the question is……does it hold up? Well fuck yes it holds up. This movie is a pure classic! I can’t believe I haven’t watched this movie more. The acting was a tad bit cheesy, but that’s expected from the 80′s. The physical effects were awesome. Most of that stuff would be done with cg these days, but Landis showed us why physical effect are soooo much better. That just might be the best wolf transformation ever put on film. There were no real plot holes in the story, the cinematography is solid and the gore is done in perfect moderation. The comic relief was done well by the best friend that comes back to haunt the lead character. My only complaint is the romantic element. I feel that it was a little forced. I mean really, does a woman fall in love that fast. He must of really put it to her good, if you know what I mean. Over all this movie is a great watch and holds up really well.
